Magnesium and Nitric Oxide are Best Friends And They’re Your Best Friends Too. Here’s Why

Magnesium is the third most abundant mineral on the planet. That’s probably because it is an essential cell signaling mineral that is critical to all living beings and that includes plants. The endothelial cells area a single layer of specialized cells that form the inner part of the membrane of the artery. The subendothelial layer lies just beneath it and it is a thin connective tissue that contains elastin. This is what makes the arteries elastic. Magnesium is essential to maintain healthy elastin. Deficiency in magnesium will degenerate the precious elastin of the artery rendering hardened arteries.

Smooth muscle cells are the next layer which provide integrity and control the dilation of the arterial cavity.

This activity is triggered by the calcium/magnesium ratio in the body. Magnesium causes relaxation and calcium causes contraction and together they control blood pressure and flow in the artery. The final messenger for the dilation response is nitric oxide.

Coronary arteries require even more elasticity than other arteries because they must expand and flex with the expansion and contraction of the heart muscle. Loss of elasticity results in inflammation of the endothelial and subendothelial layers at the junction points that are most mechanically challenged by the expansion and contraction action. Those challenged areas are the areas where arteries bifurcate. This is where clots often lodge and where a break is most likely to occur.

Additionally, when the arterial wall is injured, inflammation is the body’s response to repair. Calcium and magnesium rush to repair the injury and if there is more calcium than magnesium, than calcium precipitates around the area of inflammation causing rigidity and interferes with blood flow.
